What is it?
DNA testing can be used to confirm if two individuals are identical or non-identical (fraternal) twins.
What is the difference between identical and fraternal twins?
Identical or monozygotic twins develop from a single fertilized egg that divides and develops as two separate embryos. Identical twins have exactly the same DNA. They will be the same sex and they are more likely to look like each other.
Fraternal or non-identical twins develop from two separate fertilized eggs. Non-identical twins will share on average half of their DNA, similar to the percentage of DNA shared by two siblings who are not twins. Fraternal twins can be the same or different genders.
How are results from twin DNA tests used?
Twin tests are generally performed to confirm whether twins are identical or non-identical. The test requires a DNA sample from each twin, usually collected using a cotton swab rubbed inside the cheek.
